A grease trap is a purpose-built tank that can be installed above or below ground. They are typically constructed from either concrete, poly or fibreglass and come in many shapes and sizes.

Grease and fats are lighter than water, so they float to the surface. The internal baffles of a grease trap stop these fats and oils in the tank and prevent them from making their way into the sewer system, which would cause regular blockages. Another purpose of the grease trap that is not commonly known is that it helps stop hot water and hot grease/fats from damaging PVC pipes. The grease trap allows the liquids to cool before entering the sewer system.
